Dzongkha serves as the official language of Bhutan. However, due to the diverse indigenous communities that have evolved as a result of geographical diversity, a multitude of dialects are spoken across the country. Bhutan boasts a rich linguistic landscape with as many as 20 different dialects.
Notably, within the three predominant ethnic groups – Sharchop, Ngalop, and Lhotsampa – distinct dialects such as Sharchop-kha, Ngalop-kha, and Lhotsampa-kha are spoken. You are encouraged to engage with the locals in their dialects, especially during homestays or while enjoying traditional meals with your hosts.
However, English is widely understood by most, particularly among urban residents.
