In Dagana, where legends whisper through ancient stones and the beauty of nature embraces the spirit, every moment is a dance of cultural richness and timeless wonder.
Dagana has a storied history connected to the Daga Penlop, who was one of the three most powerful Penlops. A Penlop is a title held by the regional governors before the advent of the Monarchy in the country.
One of the most fascinating features of Dagana is the trio of stone megaliths known as the “Sky Pillar Rock” (Do Namkhai Kaw), “The Rock of Ancient Steps” (Do Kelpai Genthey), and “The Frontier Sky Fortress” (Tha Namkhai Dzong). According to legend, during the construction of Daga Trashiyangtse Dzong, the megalith known as the Frontier Sky Fortress emitted telepathic messages to the builders, warning that the dzong would collapse if built higher than its current height. To this day, the golden pinnacle of the dzong is said to be level with the tip of the megalith, adding a mystical allure to the site.
Two temples that deserve special mention are the Shathong Lhakhang, founded by the Buddhist Master Dupthob (Siddhi) Shawa Ripa, and the Nyindukha Lhakhang, founded in the 18th century. Shawa Ripa, an ancient Buddhist Master, is said to have lived for over 900 years, further adding to the district’s rich tapestry of legends and spiritual heritage.
